How to know if you're running Windows 32-bit or 64-bit

You may notice that when downloading drivers for your computer there are two options for Operating , 32-bit or 64-bit. This guide describes how to manually determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows.

Windows 10

1. Start by locating the start button on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, click the start button.

2. In the popup menu click System.

3. Your bit configuration will be displayed in the System field next to System type.

In this case, you can see that we are running the 64-bit version of Windows 10!

Windows 8

There are two methods that you can use to determine whether you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 8.

Method 1: View the System window in Control Panel

  1. Click Search in the lower right-hand corner of the screen.

  2. Type system in the search box, and then click Settings.

  3. Click System.

  4. The bit version of your PC's operating system will be displayed in the System type field under the System heading.

Method 2: View the System Information window

  1. Click Search in the lower right-hand corner of the display.

  2. In the search box, type system information.

  3. Click System, click System Information and then click System Summary.

  4. The bit version of your PC's operating system will be displayed in the System type field under the Item heading.

Windows 7

If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, there are two methods to determine whether you are running a 32-bit version or a 64-bit version. If one method does not work, try the other method.

Method 1: View the System window in Control Panel

  1. Click Start, type system in the Start Search box, and then click system in the Programs list.

  2. The bit version of your operating system appears in the System type field under System.

Method 2: View the System Information window

  1. Click Start, type system in the Start Search box, and then click System Information in the Programs list.

  2. When System Summary is selected in the navigation window, the operating system is displayed in the System type field under Item.
