Setting up a Cash Drawer Float

A cash drawer float is a desired balance that you wish to maintain in the cash drawer at all times. When you have a float set up, Heartland Retail will automatically tell you how much cash needs to be removed from the drawer upon closing in order to maintain that float.

To set up a float:

  1. In the Settings menu, navigate to the cash drawer via Locations > Cash Drawers.

On the location page, you will see a "Desired Balance (Float)" field. By default, this field is blank.

  1. Enter the dollar amount that you would like to keep in this drawer at all times and click the "Save" button.

You have successfully set up a float in your cash drawer.

Please note: There will be an initial variance when you close your drawer where you'll be "over." This is because there was no float initially so the drawer was set to $0.00. After this initial variance your drawer will be balanced moving forward.

Now that you have a float set up, if a user tries to close the cash drawer and there is a difference of more than $10 between the float and the balance remaining in the drawer, the user will receive a warning like this one:
